The empires and cultures in the ancient near east had a significant impact on the world of the Bible, and on the Israelites themselves.  Yahweh, the God of the Bible, is distinct from the gods of these cultures and we won't know how he's different unless we know how the other gods and their legacies were characterized.  Join me in looking at creation myths from Babylon, Sumeria and Egypt, and what it can all tell us about God and the Bible.

I thought I could just take some flights and run around the country without problems, and also thought starting another language on my break was an easy side quest.  I was wrong on both counts.

Part of making biblical Hebrew more accessible and easier to learn (especially for Bible translators) is making more easy reading materials to learn it.  You don't pick up Shakespeare to learn English, and starting in the Old Testament to learn biblical Hebrew is pretty hard.  It can be very discouraging and it's part of why (one part!) only 1% of people who learn biblical Hebrew in seminary or college actually go on to use it.  It's tough.  And we need all the resources to make it easier.  So my summer project was to translate a book into biblical Hebrew, to experiment with translation, but also to help provide resources for people to learn Hebrew.  Listen in as I and a few friends read you the book.  Credits go to Annie, for excellent picture descriptions, Erin, for reading the first half of the book, and Rachel (the other one) for joining me two nights later to finish it.  She was our missing person on the first part, so we got everyone included in the end.  Just like the bunny.

John's last book and the Bible's last book is an apocalypse, a revelation by God through Jesus.  But how does it relate to other apocalyptic literature and how does that inform our reading of it?

The gospels are the most taught about, talked about and arguably the easiest to understand part of the Bible.  What more could I possibly say about them that you might not know??

Why are prophets so weird?  Well God told them to be weird.  But were they really weird?

The Bible is...

So many things.  Simple and filled with truth.  Pretty foreign and difficult to fully understand.  Sometimes you just need a little more info to really understand a concept, or context of a word, passage, book, or idea.  This podcast is just to add to your arsenal of tools to help you understand the Bible.
